The people shall speak.

Since 2010, through our work on TEDxSoweto and TEDxJohannesburg, we've conceived and produced over 20 memorable events, helping close to 100 speakers prepare their TEDx presentations. At TED@Johannesburg, we had the rare privilege of working directly with the TED team and watching TED curator Chris Anderson take speakers through their paces, often turning dust into gold. This experience has allowed us to see first hand what goes into putting together a killer TEDx Talk, or any other presentation, for that matter. We're happy to announce that we'll be ploughing some of these unique, proprietary learnings back into the TEDx community, and beyond.

Gamatong recently partnered with TEDxVanderbijlpark to help with speaker prepping. This is a relatively intense programme that begins with a one-on-one Skype chat with each speaker six weeks before the event, followed by a three-hour group workshop four weeks before, and rehearsals a day or two before the big day. The programme includes an overview of the basic requirements for a TEDx Talk, a deep dive into the structure of great talks, uncovering clues to what makes for great storytelling, examining issues around body language and physical presentation, and tips on how to deal with stage fright. So far feedback has been awesome. It seems speakers are benefitting a great deal from the process. We can’t wait to get to the end of the programme to see how it all pans out.

TEDxVanderbijlpark takes place on Human Rights Day, Friday 21 March 2014, at Vaal University of Technology, in Vanderbijlpark. The event feature’s an exciting lineup, with speakers pooled not only locally from the Vaal area, but also from greater Johannesburg and as far afield as Cape Town. See the lineup here. At Gamatong, we’re big on any discussion about the city and public transport so we’re particularly excited about Rehana Mosajee’s talk. She is former MMC for Transport at the City of Johannesburg. Under her leadership, the city set new standards for public transport in South Africa and on the continent with the Reavaya bus rapid transport system. We have it on good authority that the title of the talk she's preparing is 'The People Shall Move', but shhh… don’t tell anyone (and if you do, you didn’t hear it from us).
